June 7, 2023 — BULLETIN: Air quality concerns affecting lacrosse schedule in one key locale

It was announced shortly before 11 a.m. today that several events, including a pair of anticipated matchups in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Class L semifinal round, would be postponed due to air quality concerns.

Forest fires in Canada and wind conditions have pushed smoky air down over a wide swath of the Northeast U.S. the last few days, culminating in air particulate readings that are unhealthy for some groups.

The lacrosse and tennis playoffs have been postponed, but the girls’ golf championship, which teed off early this morning, is reportedly continuing to its conclusion because of the low aerobic nature of the game.

Tomorrow’s Class L semifinals will see the No. 1 team in all the land, Darien, take on Greenwich High School, representing a city that has three very strong teams already (Sacred Heart and Greenwich Academy having already finished their seasons). In the other half of the bracket will see Wilton taking on New Canaan.

There have been other locales affected by the haze and smoke. Pennsylvania had three of its 16 first-round contests postponed from yesterday to today, but it’s unknown whether today will see any improvement in air quality at Manheim (Pa.) Township, Pottstown Owen J. Roberts (Pa.), or West Lawn Wilson (Pa.).
