From Real to Riyal, Ronaldo cashes in for one last time with $300m a year Saudi swansong

Cristiano Ronaldo has completed his move to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.

Al Nassr on Friday announced the signing of the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus superstar, ending speculation about Ronaldo’s future.

Al Nassr posted a picture on social media of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner holding up the team’s jersey, with the club hailing the deal as “history in the making”.

“This is a signing that will not only inspire our club to achieve even greater success but inspire our league, our nation and future generations, boys and girls to be the best version of themselves,” the club said.

Ronaldo had been a free agent after his contract was terminated by Manchester United following an explosive TV interview in which he criticised manager Erik ten Hag and the club’s owners.

At the World Cup in Qatar he scored in Portugal’s opening group game against Ghana, his 118th goal for his country.

He was dropped from the starting XI for the knockout rounds, in which the team made a quarter-final exit with a 1-0 loss to Morocco.

Ronaldo inspired Portugal to the European Championship in 2016 and has scored more than 700 club goals during a career in which he has also won the Champions League on five occasions.

“I am eager to experience a new football league in a different country. Al Nassr Club’s vision is very inspiring,” the Saudi club quoted Ronaldo as saying.

It is estimated he will earn in the region of $A300 million for a season in the Saudi league.
