2022 US Nationals – Women’s Day 2 Live Blog – The Balance Beam Situation

It’s almost over! The crowning achievement of the event, the second day of women’s competition, is here. It seems a bit much to expect a day of the same quality (for the top athletes) as we saw on Friday, but it could happen.

As we stand now, Shilese Jones has an 8 tenth lead on Konnor McClain and a lead on 1.050 on Jordan Chiles, who is a couple tenths ahead of Kayla DiCello, who is in turn a couple tenths ahead of Jade Carey.

As for Leanne Wong, she is on the initial start list for bars and beam, which is what she competed the first day before her injury. Her bars warmup was definitely a mixed bag, but she did the best Bhardwaj I’ve seen from her this year. And she’s working 2.5 dismounts on beam.

Breaking: So far Brandon Wynn has done sideline karate and t-shirt gun karate.

Rotation 1

We have a big routine to start, with Jones opening the beam rotation.

In the warmup, Chiles did a double pike dismount off beam and ran so far back out of it she almost went off the podium. Cecile’s reaction:

Jones – BB – Arabian is solid – side aerial to loso, huge break and falls – front tuck is hit – switch to sissone, pretty – split jump 12 from side is nicely done with the split after the 1/2 turn – bhs bhs double pike, a little short, step forward.

Well, it couldn’t all have lasted from the first day. An opening for McClain now.

Roberson hits 1/2 on layout full, short landing with a lunge back. 13.800

Mueller – UB – toe on toe toe full to maloney, legs – to stalder 1/2, some loose back, connects to yezhova – stalder shap to tkatchev, connected – doubel front, step forward. 13.900 is a big bars score for her.

Just 12.450 for Jones.

Pierson hits Y1.5 with a step to the side, some knee bending throughout.

Carey – BB – bhs loso loso, very solid – side aerial, check, breaks connetion into split and straddle – aerial, pause before switch to switch 1/2, leg up wobble – switch side – split jump 1/2 from side, short of split – bhs bhs double pike, step back. Overall solid. 13.300

McClain – VT – DTY, good height, bounce back. 14.350

DiCello – UB – sralder full to toe on, breaks connection – now does maloney to clear hip – high church – piked jaeger – pak – van leeuwen – FTDT, stuck landing. No major skill errors but broke a couple intended connections in there. 13.500. She went 14.100 on day 1.

Jong finishes FX with a double pike, bounce back. 13.000

14.300 for Blakely’s DTY.

Zeiss – UB – toe full, some legs into pak, high – maloney to gienger, close catch, somewhat low – yezhova, some elg separation – van leeuwen, feet apart – FTDT, just a small step to the side. 13.800

Chiles – BB – bhs loso loso series, right on, some feet – aerial to straddle to bhs, comfortable – full turn, ever so slightly overturned – side somi, secure – switch to sissone – side aerial, secure – switch side, maybe a bit tight – double pike, small hop forward. Excellent routine. 13.450

Matthews – BB – bhs mount, saved well, she came in off line, check – side aerial to loso, lean to the side – split to wolf jump – wolf double – swtich to switch 1/2, maybe short on the switch 1/2 – aerail, keeps arms moving to connect into split to bhs – double tuck, step back. Nice one after a couple larger errors to start.

McClain has moved ahead of Jones by 1.100 after the first rotation with a hit vault to Jones’ fall on beam. Blakely also moves into 5th ahead of Carey.

Rotation 2

Mueller off on her beam mount. Holds onto her side aerial loso with a couple arm waves.

Pierson dismounts bars with a FTDT, chest down, step

Carey is being held for HOURS on floor to start this rotation. Like the other events are basically already done.

Alipio – UB – oe 1/2 to piked jaeger, hit – pak, large straddle – toe full – van leeuwen, lots of legs – double tuck, step back

Carey – FX – DLO 1/1, some legs in the beginning, small hop – front loso through to FTDT, small slide – switch full, around – double double, shorter landings, hop forward – split leap full – double pike, small slide. A couple landing errors, nothing too huge, will be a big score. 13.850

McClain – UB – weiler 1/2 to stalder full to stalder shap, good – toe full, a bit late – Church to Pak, connected, legs apart – van leeuwen, some tucking – double pike, hop. Lots more connections than the first day. 14.050

DiCello – BB – candle mount, good – wolf triple, very solid – side aerial, small lean – aerial to split jump – swtich to sissone – bhs los loso, very strong, secure – switch 1/2 – double tuck is short with a hop forward. Great on the beam. 13.550

McClain’s bars score is a big improvement over the first day.

Blakely – UB – stalder 1/2 to piked jaeger, not the highest but hit – Ricna to pak, only a small leg break – toe full, somewhat late – van leeuwen, hit – higgins to double front, small step. 13.900

Chiles – FX – 1.5 throigh to FTDT, strong, small slide – DLO, good height, medium bounce back – wolf doubel, hit – L hop full to split 1.5, pulls it around ish, some feet – switch side 1/2, little hop – front through to double tuck, chest down with a lunge. Good. 13.900

Jung-Ruivivar – BB – good loso mount – wolf double, small lean – side aerial to loso, lean – switch to split leap. connected – aerial, little pause – 1.5, step forward. 13.100

Jones – FX – double double tuck, solid, small movement – double L turn, good completion – split leap full – DLO, secure landing – front tuck through to double tuck, shuffle back, some chest position – l hop full to switch 1/2 – Excellent work.

14.250 is an improvement of .150 over the first day.

That means McClain’s lead in the AA will be .900 heading into the third rotation.

Chiles, DiCello, and Blakely remain 3-4-5. Carey is 6th but will likely move up after vault.

Rotation 3

Shilese is trying to do the Lion King Cam with Jordan.

Alipio – BB – loso mount – check – side aerial to loso loso, right on – aerial, hit – wolf turn double, slight teetering – swtich to switch 1/2 to split jump, well connected – side somi, hit – gainer tuck full, stuck. Really good one.

Chiles – VT – DTY – great height, shows solid control on landing, small hop in place. 14.300

Rosen lands short on her opening DLO on floor, hop forward –

McClain – BB – back tuck full, leg way up but holds it – bhs bhs layout, another leg up check but not too large – swtich to switch 1/2, good positions, small pause in between – aerail to split – straddle – side aerial,. holds it – switch, does not do the ring position, repeated skill – bhs bhs double pike, small step back. 14.100

Carey hits her open Cheng, some crazy legs, not a large slide back. 14.650

Missed DiCello’s opening during those things but second pass is 1.5 to front full, solid – switch ring – split leap full, comfortable – double tuck, a bit short, hop. 13.650

Jones went 14.500 for her DTY.

Wong – UB – Jaeger, good – toe full to bhardwaj, small leg break but good – maloney to pak, clean – van leeuwen, clean – good handstand positions – DLO, stuck landing. No troubles there.

Blakely – BB – wolf triple is nice – back tuck full, leg up check, holds onto it – fhs to front tuck, arm wave correction – switch, pause into switch 1/2, secure elements – aerail to split to straddle, right on – side aerial, step back – double tuck, looks like her feet got caught under herself on landing with a couple steps back to stay upright. 12.950

Fatta finishes Ub with a nice DLO.

14.250 for Wong on bars.

Jong – UB – stalder full, very late and crooked – stalder shap to pak, leg separatipon – van leeuwen, another pretty large leg break – inbar to inbar 1/2 to piked jaeger, caught – FTDT, hop forward.

Roberson – BB – loso mount to bhs, large break, leg up, stays on – back tuck full, falls – onodi, check – straddle jump to tuck jump 1/2 – switch side – split leap full, looked about 3/4 around – side aerial to loso loso is very secure – double pike, short, lunge forward

Mueller – FX – popa, good height – 2.5 to front tuck, good stick – 1.5 to fornt full, also secure – switch 1/2 – wolf double, gets it around – double tuck, hop back. Good.

Pierson – BB – side aerial, lean correction – bhs loso loso, leg up check, not large – swtich to sissone – full turn check – aerial, check before split jump – side somi, secure – 2.5 dismount went kind of off to the side, a couple steps back to save it.

Rotation 4

So heading into the last event, McClain will have 0.500 on Jones. On the first day, Jones on bars outscored McClain on floor by .950.

Chiles remains in third, Carey moves up to 4th, bumping DiCello to 5th and Blakely to 6th.

DiCello – VT – hits DTY, hop back, some knees 14.300

Chiles – UB – pauses in toe full but works through it – church to pak, good leg position – maloney to gienger – piked jaeger – bail and shoot to high, clean – FTDT, holds the landing. An error at the beginning, otherwise quite comfortable.

55.000 today for DiCello.

Hit FTY for Jung-Ruivivar, step back, chest up

14.100 for Chiles, not too far down on her day 1 bars.

McClain – FX – DLO 1/1, chest a little forward, hop – DLO, good, slide back – switch ring, solid back leg – split leap full – wolf double, around, awkwards out of it with a lean – back 1.5 to front full, little hop – double pike, chest down, hop. Another solid day for her. Bars was much better than the first day, but she gave away more on beam, so it sort of evened out.

Wong – BB – switch to wolf jump full, around – bhs loso, clean, good extension – L turn, check – swtich ring, secure – aerial to straddle to split – side aerial, secure – side somi, good – 2.5 is a journey but she does landing, lunge to the side.

Some family came in and walked right in front of the Florida team as they were watching Leanne’s routine.

13.850 on floor for McClain.

Blakely – FX – DLO, solid, step back, just a little pike – DLO, hop back, step – wolf double, around

Jones – UB – sralder full to stalder shap to tkatchev, nice – toe full to piked ricna to pak, well connected – van leeuwe, some leg separation, small – toe 1/2 – double front – deep and fell! Oh she had it.

Blakely went 13.450 on floor.

13.600 for Jones will put her just ahead of Chiles for 2nd, but McClain remains in first.

Carey – UB – Church, hit – blind to yeahova, legs apart, hit – maloney to bhardwaj, good – van leeuwen – giant full, late – FTDT, small hop back.

Jong – BB – switch mount – back tuck full, check – front tuck, secure – double wolf turn, nice – bhs to back whip – switch to pike jump – double pike, chest forward, hop.

13.450 on bars for Carey. That will keep her ahead of Blakely for 5th but will not pass DiCello for 4th.

Booth hits her tkatchev 1/2 to yezhova combination. Pierson stumble back and fall on opening pass.

Neal – BB – switch to wolf, hit – bhs loso loso, very solid – side aerial, hit – L turn, smooth – aerial – side somi, secure – double pike, shuffle back. Really good one. 13.300

Alipio – FX – double pike, bounce back – L turn double is around – falls out of a double y spin, hands down – 2.5 to front layout, hop – wolf double – front full, step.

FINAL:
1. McClain – 112.750
2. Jones – 112.000
3. Chiles – 111.900
4. DiCello – 110.950
5. Carey – 110.900

Jones’ lead from the first day could not overcome the two falls today, but worth noting that she still went 54.800 with two falls and could have withstood a single fall. McClain’s bars was the big accomplishment for her today, because if she can start consistently getting 14s, she becomes a true 4-event TF gymnast.

Chiles and DiCello both had medium errors on bars and got somewhat lower beam scores, but overall their performances were quite even across the two days and both went 8 for 8 in a successful competition. Carey was also down a little bit today from the first day but hit every routine.
