SISU Movie Review

World of Martial Arts Television says:

“Best film this year.”

“Imagine an unstoppable old Clint Eastwood in Kurosawa Samurai Tarantino Spaghetti Far North Finland Killing Nazi Bstrds”

“If Tarantino made a movie about never fkin giving in to shitty Nazis then this would be it”

“SISU is a tour de force that epitomises the martial arts spirit of unrelenting determination”

“Every martial artist talks about being indomitable in the face of overwhelming odds, this film is it, this is SISU”

In the dying days of WWII, a solitary gold prospector, a battered, old soldier (Jorma Tommila) crosses paths in the bleak, summer highlands near the Arctic Circle with Nazis on a scorched-earth retreat in northern Finland. They are killing and destroying everything as they escape to Norway. They are lead by a murderous commander with a tank, trucks, weapons and captured women.

The Nazis stop him, his horse and dog… and steal his gold. That quickly goes wrong when they discover they have just tangled with no ordinary miner… he is a hardened commando, a veteran of fighting bloodthirsty Soviets and then the Nazis.

There is no direct translation for the Finnish word “sisu”, this battered, legendary ex-soldier embodies what sisu means: the unrelenting form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds. And no matter what the Nazis throw at him, the one-man death squad will go to outrageous lengths to get his gold back and kill every last Nazi in his path.

Yes, there is strong, bloody violence and gore, but that is the nature of war. The lead actor Jorma Tommila as Aatami is a Finnish version of Clint Eastwood and carries the burden well. It is perfectly pulpy, with stylish cinematography, very sparse dialogue, Tarantino style chapter blocks, yes the last one is “KILL ‘EM ALL”, epic landscapes, cool audio, and tells a very different WW2 story.

It isn’t Saving Private Ryan, or Inglorious Basterds… it is, after a slightly slow start, an inventive revenge rampage against psychopathic, brutal Nazis with a signature pick axe, that is almost as iconically useful as Thor’s hammer Mjolnir. Enslaved women wreak their own revenge on their captors, the escaping Nazi troops think they can get away with anything BUT no one bad gets out alive.

Watch it and feel empowered.

SISU stars Jorma Tommila (Big Game) as the charismatic Aatami Korpi,Aksel Hennie (The Martian), Jack Doolan (TV’s ‘Marcella’), Mimosa Willamo (Aurora) and Onni Tommila (Big Game).

It is rated 15 and runs for 1 hour and 31 minutes.
