In what is set to be one of, if not the, most star-studded event since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the Paris World Challenge Cup is set for this Saturday and Sunday at Accor Arena in Paris, France.
Accor Arena is also where Artistic Gymnastics competitions will take place for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The Paris World Challenge Cup is an apparatus-only event, meaning there is no all-around competition. There will be 10 finals total, including the six men’s events and four women’s events, with qualifications being held on Saturday and finals on Sunday.
The field includes two of the four women’s apparatus champions from the Tokyo Games – Rebeca Andrade (Brazil) and Jade Carey (USA) – as well as Olympic floor champion Artem Dolgopyat (Israel) and a slew of Olympic and world medalists on the men’s side.
The U.S. contingent consists of Carey, Olympic team silver medalist Jordan Chiles, U.S. women’s all-around silver medalist Shilese Jones, U.S. men’s all-around champion and world high bar bronze medalist Brody Malone, and U.S. men’s all-around silver medalist and world vault bronze medalist Donnell Whittenburg.
Carey is set for vault and beam; Chiles for vault, bars, and floor; and Jones for bars, beam, and floor.
Malone and Whittenburg are both slated to compete in all six events on the men’s side. The pair get to participate in this event instead of having to participate at world team selection camp.
On the men’s international side, in addition to Dolgopyat, we’ll also see pommel horse specialist Rhys McClenaghan (IRL), floor star Rayderley Zapata (ESP), and two high bar stars in Tin Srbic (CRO) and Arthur Mariano (BRA).
On the women’s international side, fans will get a peek at Melanie De Jesus dos Santos (FRA), who recently moved to the U.S. to train at World Champions Centre. The longtime French star will compete all apparatus except vault. Andrade will compete on vault, where she won the gold medal in Tokyo, and bars. Her teammate Flavia Saraiva (BRA) will focus on beam and floor. Ellie Black (CAN) is slated to compete bars and beam while Olympic team bronze medalist Jennifer Gadirova (GBR) is set for all four apparatus.
This event kicks off three-straight weekends of world challenge cups, with the final two events of the series slated for September 30-October 2 in Szombathely, Hungary, and October 7-9 in Mersin, Turkey. Then all eyes turn to Liverpool, England, for the 2022 world championships.
