Two things come to mind when I hear thw word “nunchucks”: Bruce Lee and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Although these cinematic icons are entertaining, nunchaku were used for self-defense in Japan not that long ago. Check out this short blog post to learn more about this weapon and the GMAU Nunchaku program.

What is Nunchakujutsu?

Nunchakujutsu is a Japanese martial art that focuses on the use of nunchaku, a traditional Okinawan weapon consisting of two sticks connected by a chain or rope. Nunchakujutsu emphasizes the use of the nunchaku for self-defense, as well as for combat against multiple attackers.

The techniques and movements of nunchakujutsu are designed to maximize the effectiveness of the nunchaku as a weapon, while also incorporating footwork and strikes with other parts of the body.

Practitioners of nunchakujutsu learn a variety of offensive and defensive techniques including strikes, blocks, locks, throws, and joint manipulations.

Nunchakujutsu is often taught as a component of broader martial arts training, such as karate or kobudo. However, there are also schools that focus specifically on nunchakujutsu and offer comprehensive training in the use of the nunchaku.

Who Should Train in Nunchakujutsu?

Nunchakujutsu can be practiced by anyone who’s interested in learning a traditional martial art and in weapons training. However, like any martial art, it’s important to consider whether nunchakujutsu is the right fit for you based on your physical abilities, interests, and goals.

Nunchakujutsu can be physically demanding and requires a certain level of physical fitness, strength, and coordination. Therefore, individuals who are interested in training in nunchakujutsu should be prepared to engage in regular exercise to enhance their abilities.

It’s also important to note that nunchakujutsu involves the use of a potentially deadly weapon, which requires proper training and safety precautions. (You also need to be aware of local laws pertaining to carrying nunchaku.) As such, it may not be suitable for individuals who are uncomfortable with weapons training or who have a history of injuries or physical limitations that may prevent them from safely practicing the techniques.
