Matt Renshaw Replaces David Warner, Who Is Sidelined With A Concussion

David Warner has been ruled out of the second Test against India in Delhi due to a concussion and will be replaced by Matt Renshaw.

Towards the end of the 10th over, Warner was hit on the skull by Mohammed Siraj, who had previously smacked him on the elbow. He attempted a Siraj bouncer but was outpaced and got a top edge flush into the grill of the helmet and his left jaw as he twisted his head to the leg side.

Warner received extensive care from the Australia team doctor and physiotherapist for the elbow injury, but he skipped a concussion test and did not have his helmet changed after the head injury. The team doctor checked on Warner after the 10th over when he changed his gloves, but instead of thoroughly inspecting Warner or the helmet, the doctor returned to the dugout.

Later in the day, when Australia started to bowl, he continued to bat before edging Mohammad Shami to the wicketkeeper for a laborious 15. He then chose not to field.

“David Warner will now follow the graduated return to sports protocols”: CA

He was said to not be feeling “100 percent” at the time, and after additional evaluation that evening, he failed a concussion test and was forced to withdraw from the game.

“Warner will now follow the graduated return to sport protocols ahead of the third Test in Indore in line with Cricket Australia guidelines,” a CA statement said.

David Warner’s absence from the tour adds to his rocky start following two missteps in Nagpur that cast doubt on his future in Test cricket. He now has a 21.78 Test average for India.

Renshaw will bat first in the second innings, but ICC match official Andy Pycroft has clarified that he is not permitted to bowl in Warner’s place. In order to make room for Travis Head’s return, Renshaw participated in the first Test in Nagpur but was benched after the team lost by innings.
