Diogo Ribeiro Rips 47.98 POR National Record In 100 Freestyle

2023 PORTUGAL OPEN

18-year-old Diogo Ribeiro broke his second national record in as many days while competing at the 2023 Portugal Open.

The World Junior champion raced his way to the top of the men’s 100m freestyle podium, firing off a swift result of 47.98 for his first-ever outing under the 48-second barrier.

Ribeiro actually broke the record first in the prelims when he notched a top-seeded effort of 48.01. Opening in 22.73 and closing in 25.28, Ribeiro’s morning time crushed his own previous Portuguese standard of 48.52 he put on the books at the 2022 European Championships.

During the final, Ribeiro split 22.85/25.13 en route to his 47.98 victory. His winning time clears both the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 48.51 needed for the World Championships as well as the Olympic Qualification Time of 48.34 needed for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Ribeiro now ranks 5th in the world in this men’s 100m free event.
