Race 5

There are five unraced runners in the field, so as is always the case in these types of races, a keen eye should be kept on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether any of the connection believe that they can win first time out. Any betting support for a runner or runners should be respected.

Of the raced runners CANDLELIT may well prove to be the best. He jumped awkwardly and overraced in the early stages and then hung in all the way down the home straight when finishing third on debut over five furlongs, 2.2L behind the winner. He would have learnt from that experience and with the natural improvement that can be expected, he could be the one that they all have to beat, jumping from draw five.

SEPARATIST tried to go from jump to wire when ending up in seventh place last time out over seven furlongs, 2.3L behind the winner, but he did hang out on the home turn. The form of that race has been franked and from his handy draw three, he is likely to attempt similar tactics today and should be right up there when they hit the line.

SIR TOM has finished second in two of his last three runs, the latest over five furlongs, beaten just 1.3L. The gelding is drawn one inside the latter and will be looking to go one better today.

Race 6

Three year old fillies could fight out the finish to this race and complete the trifecta, but the day’s best bet, GORGEOUS ZARA is taken to lead the field home. She has only had the two runs to date, finishing third first time out over seven furlongs and followed that up with a second place finish next time out over a mile, just a half length back from the winner and the form of that race has been franked. She raced just behind the leaders that day and made good late progress over the closing stages, despite hanging out on the home turn. She will have to negotiate gate twelve, but she should use her early gate speed to move across without expending too much energy and could prove hard to topple.

EPISODIC had solid form prior to being a tad disappointing when finishing eighth last time out over 1500M, just under five lengths adrift of the victor, but she was reported to be lame in her near foreleg that day, so that effort is best ignored. She has pulled a wideish draw eight, but she looks to be the immediate danger to the top choice.

MOUNTAIN GUEST is seldom far off the action and ran on from some way back to finish third last time out over a mile, just over one length back from the winner. She is drawn wider in gate ten, but she does have her peak run after returning from a 22 week break and should be involved in the finish.

Race 7

FIELD MARSHAL was bumped at the start and came the widest of them all into the home stretch, before hanging out all the way down to the wire to finish seventh last time out over a mile, just under a length and a half off the winner, but the form of that race has been franked and whilst drawn wide in gate ten, he could provide Brenton Avdulla with the winner of the second and third leg of the day’s Jackpot.

CASUAL CONNECTION followed up his penultimate run victory over a mile with a sixth place finish next time out over the same journey, three lengths back from the winner, but he only saw daylight at the 175M mark that day, before finishing off his race well. He gets a kinder draw four and will have ex-SA jockey Keagan Latham in the irons, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.

WHETU is drawn one outside the latter and he too also won his penultimate run, but in his case over ten furlongs and then finished fifth next time out over the same trip, six lengths behind the winner, but he was slow away on that occasion, before staying on stoutly over the latter stages and as such, he should be included in all bets.

Race 8

The day’s value bet, MISS HELLFIRE is a three year old filly taking on the boys, but she showed marked improvement to finish fourth in her latest outing over 1300M, just over a length behind the winner, when returning from an 18 week break. She jumped awkwardly in that event, was bumped at the 400M mark, before coming three wide into the home straight, so she had her excuses. She will have to overcome a wide draw sixteen, but if she is able to confirm that last effort, she should be a big runner in the line-up.

TOKEN CAPITALIST is not drawn much better, just one gate inside the top pick, but he shifted in and was bumped at the 100M mark when finishing sixth last time out over a mile, 1.7L behind the victor. He returns here from a 17 week spell, but has had the benefit of two barrier trials, finishing second in the latest.

THE EMPIRE has consistent formlines to his name and did not get the clearest of passages in the home straight when ending up in fourth spot last time out over six furlongs, 2.2L behind the winner. That was the geldings first run for his new trainer and from a useful draw three and with having 3kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice, he should turn in another honest effort today.
