Yesterday, an unofficial champion was crowned on the public-school side of girls’ high-school lacrosse in one of the hotbeds of the sport, Maryland.
Contrast that with the wide-open, unpredictable rollercoaster of a ride that the 15 teams in the “A” Division of the Interscholastic Athletic Asssociation of Maryland are taking.
Thus far, we’ve had three-time defending champion Brooklandville St. Paul’s (Md.) losing by a goal to Owings Mills McDonogh (Md.). That’s a team which suffered a one-goal loss to their neighbors to the south, Washington Georgetown Visitation (D.C.).
Glenelg (Md.) Country School, a team which has been achingly close to winning the postseason tournament the last couple of years, has a 15-5 win over a good Towson Notre Dame Prep (Md.) side. NDP, for its part, bested Severn Archbishop Spalding (Md.) by an 11-9 score. Spalding, for its part, has a win over a good Brookland Garrison Forest (Md.) side.
It’s a tangle of results which is impossible to figure out, and the IAAM season has a full month to go.
The Road to Sparks-Glencoe, in short, is going to be a bumpy one. At least one nationally-prominent team isn’t going to make it to the final. That’s how good the conference is.
