April 2, 2023 — A celebration worthy of an all-world team

They celebrated 50 years of varsity women’s lacrosse at the University of Maryland today.

From a banquet in the days before today’s game against Michigan, to the pregame tailgate to the halftime ceremony, luminaries from the game’s past came back to College Park for the anniversary celebration.

It was a celebration with so many players from so many successful teams, you could conceivably put together an alumnae team which could compete anywhere, any time, on any stage.

The Maryland program has put together excellence in goal (Megan Taylor, Jamie Brodsky), in close defense (Alice Mercer, Tori Wellington, Brittany Poist, Courtney Martinez), in the midfield (Kelly Amonte, Laura Zimmerman, Quinn Carney, Kali Harshorn, Karri Ellen Johnson, Acacia Walker, Dana Dobbie), and at attack (Jen Adams, Taylor Cummings, Megan Whittle, Sarah Mollison).

It’s been good to see some alumnae playing in the professional ranks over the last four or five years, but I’d like to have seen more of this kind of post-collegiate professional play around the turn of the century. But with a number of professional promotions having cycled in and out of existence the last five years, I guess the best way to pay tribute to the players of the past is to celebrate and invest in the best players that are in the game today, no matter which promotion comes to the forefront.
