Owen Farrell could MISS the start of the Six Nations if found guilty of a dangerous tackle

Owen Farrell could MISS the start of the Six Nations if found guilty of a dangerous tackle on Jack Clement… with the England captain set to learn on Monday if he can face Scotland in next month’s tournament opener

  • If Farrell is found guilty, he will miss England’s opening game against Scotland

Owen Farrell could be banned for the start of England’s Six Nations campaign if he is found guilty of a dangerous tackle.

The Saracens No 10 is awaiting the citing commissioner’s report after his shoulder collided with the chin of Gloucester’s Jack Clement on Friday night.

No action was taken by referee Karl Dickson during the game because the TMO was deemed to have intervened too long after the incident.

However, Farrell could face retrospective action, with the RFU expected to deliver their official disciplinary update tomorrow.

Having been banned for five weeks for a dangerous tackle in 2020, Farrell’s disciplinary record could count against him if he is charged.

England’s Six Nations opener against Scotland is four weeks away, meaning Farrell would be free to play if the incident is deemed worthy of a low-end two- week ban. Farrell has been the form No 10 in the Premiership this season, although Marcus Smith and George Ford are both primed to make their comebacks from injury this month.

Steve Borthwick will name his first England squad for the Six Nations on January 16, and he is permitted to make only five changes to the existing 45-man EPS squad. The England head coach, who was in Gloucester on Friday to watch Farrell kick the winning drop goal, yesterday received a glowing endorsement from his predecessor, Eddie Jones.

Jones told The Guardian: ‘Steve Borthwick was there until 2020. He then wanted his own career. One of my jobs was to get England to win again, which I did, and also to produce the next head coach. So I look back with satisfaction because Steve will do a bloody good job. He’s outstanding.’

Since being sacked last month, Jones has held talks with Australia about a coaching role in time for this year’s World Cup. He revealed: ‘I’ve got a couple of good options. I’m getting to the stage of talking contracts so I’ll make a decision in the next couple of weeks.’
