The 2022 Washington Open took place May 28th – May 30th. Coming off of a terrible outing in the Senior Open, I decided to enroll in the adult-only section. My reasoning for this was that I didn’t need the psychological distraction and stress of playing an underrated scholastic player. Instead, I wanted to play adults with established chess ratings so I could assess my playing strength against theirs.
Ironically, my first game was with an adult who had not played tournament chess in almost ten years. He was rated 762, but when I first saw that pairing chart, I mistakenly read it as 1762! He played a solid game but in the end I managed to secure the win.
