Elton checks into drug rehab

Embattled Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies has reportedly booked himself into a drug rehabilitation centre in a bid to “return to the field as a better man and player”.

The veteran flyhalf was sent home from Argentina last month after being accused of having an affair with team dietician Zeenat Simjee and will not tour Europe with the Boks in November.

On Friday, the 32-year-old took to Instagram to say he “fully understands and supports” the decision not to select him.

According to Rapport newspaper, while staying in a guest house with Simjee in Mbombela before the Bok Test against the All Blacks in August, Jantjies offered drugs to a waiter.

The waiter afterward complained to Rapport‘s source, who witnessed the offer.

Rapport was told by two independent sources that Jantjies booked himself into the Harmony clinic in Hout Bay a few weeks ago and was treated for drug addiction.

According to Harmony’s website, they follow a “scientific and medical approach combined with the latest research” to give people the best chance “to rebuild their lives”.

“The fact of the matter is that I’ve haven’t played any rugby since the Rugby Championship and that I’ve kept my public and personal promise to get professional help and focus on my mental health, and to get my personal life and career back on track,” Jantjies told Rapport.

“It’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I have have continued training and am mentally and physically in a good space. I’ve received fantastic support from the therapeutic team I’ve worked with to ensure my personal wellbeing stays the top priority, and I know that it’s going to take hard work to get back on track.

“I am fully committed and hope to return to the field as a better man and player.”
